81st Golden Globe Nominations – Motion Picture: ‘Barbie,’ ‘Oppenheimer,’ ‘Poor Things’ Lead

The nominees in motion picture and television for the 81st Golden Globes were announced today with Barbie (9), Oppenheimer (8) Poor Things (7) and Killers of the Flower Moon (7) leading the way in the film categories.

Barbie earned nominations for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy, Best Actress – Musical or Comedy (Margot Robbie), Supporting Actor (Ryan Gosling), Director for Greta Gerwig, Screenplay and three spots in the song category. Oppenheimer‘s eight came from Motion Picture – Drama, Director, Screenplay, Best Actor (Cillian Murphy), Supporting Actress (Emily Blunt), Supporting Actor (Robert Downey Jr.) and Score. Both films were also nominated in the new created Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category for films that made over $100M in the U.S., adding one more notch to their scores.

Anatomy of a Fall and The Zone of Interest made big waves this morning, earning nods for both Motion Picture – Non-English Language and the main Motion Picture – Drama category. A rule change just a few years now allows those films (as well as animated) to compete in the main two film categories. Anatomy was also nominated in Best Actress for Sandra Hüller and Screenplay. Zone earned a nomination in Score. Neither made the cut for Best Director though. Anatomy is ineligible at the Oscars in the International Feature Film category as France did not select the film. The film they did choose, The Taste of Things, did not show up here today.

In other interesting non-English language nominations, Past Lives also earned a spot in Motion Picture – Drama and Non-English language Film. The film is from the U.S. and not eligible at the Oscars in the latter category. Past Lives was also nominated in Screenplay, Director and Best Actress for Greta Lee. Finnish actress Alma Pöysti made history as the first Finnish actress nominated for a Golden Globe for performance. She is nominated in Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Fallen Leaves.

Netflix had a great morning with its quartet of awards contenders are getting multiple nominations. Maestro is in for Picture, Director, Actor (Bradley Cooper) and Actress (Carey Mulligan), May December for Picture, Actress (Natalie Portman), Supporting Actor (Charles Melton) and Supporting Actress (Julianne Moore), Nyad for Actress (Annette Bening) and Supporting Actress (Jodie Foster) and Rustin was nominated for Actor (Colman Domingo) and Song.

But even with six slots in all categories now, introduced this year, there were still several snubs or seemingly missed shots today. American Fiction hit Picture and Actor (Jeffrey Wright) but missed screenplay. The Holdovers landed Picture, Actor (Paul Giamatti) and Supporting Actress (Da’Vine Joy Randolph) but missed Screenplay and Director. The Color Purple took the biggest hit, only earning nominations for Actress (Fantasia Barrino) and one Supporting Actress (Danielle Brooks) but missing Picture. Late breaking films like Ferrari and Origin didn’t show up at all.

Undergoing numerous changes to its board, expelling problematic members and introducing over 200 new voters, the Golden Globes, after years of high profiles scandals and controversies is hoping for a new lease on its eight decade existence.

After a year off from their expensive NBC contract (who still hold the rights to airing the show through 2027), the network aired the show last season to all-time low numbers. Cut to this season where NBC is out and CBS will now present the big show for the first time in 40 years. All eyes will be on ratings again here and CBS, with its older and consistent viewing population, has proven it can still provide TV numbers even without the covted 18-49 advertising demo.

Cedric “The Entertainer” and Wilmer Valderrama read the nominees on a livestream via CBS.com, which picked up the broadcast rights to this year’s show, airing January 7 on CBS and streaming on Paramount+.

Multi-Emmy Award-winning producing duo Glenn Weiss and Ricky Kirshner of White Cherry Entertainment (WCE) will serve as executive-producing showrunners for the 81^st Annual Golden Globe Awards, with Weiss also set to direct. Produced and owned by Dick Clark Productions, the Golden Globe Awards has been viewed in more than 200 countries and territories worldwide.

The 81^st Annual Golden Globe Awards will air live on CBS and stream on Paramount+ on Sunday, January 7, 2024, at 8 p.m. ET/5 p.m. PT.
